Founded in 1998, the Chama Valley Humane Society is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) organization supported entirely through fundraising, private donations, and grants.
Our mission is to provide no-kill solutions to reduce the population of homeless cats and dogs by sponsoring a spay and neuter program for companion pets and feral cats, working with regional shelters and foster homes to rehabilitate and rehome animals, and educating those in the community we serve about responsible pet ownership.

Truthfully, we are at a tipping point of being unable to rescue many animals anymore unless we can recruit some new foster homes.
We know fostering is hard—we often do it ourselves! Many people say they would be unable to let a kitten or puppy (or dog or cat) go after keeping it a week or more. We think it is a mindset to some degree—you cannot help more if you keep all your fosters. Some of us have fostered literally hundreds—maybe thousands—of animals over the years (and maybe kept a few along the way…).
The best thing about fostering is knowing you have helped save the life of an unwanted animal and enabled them to live a full and happy life. As needed, we will supply food, supplies, and vet care. We often post animals in need on our Facebook page, but you are also encouraged to fill out a Foster Application on our web site if you are interested. You can also call us at 888-666-0641 and leave a message if you want to find out more.

Our 14th Annual Jog, Walk and Wag event on September 26, 2026 was SO much fun!
The crowd was a bit smaller than usual because (we think) of all the rainy weather in the days before the event, BUT the weather turned out glorious! Check out a slide show of the events!

Dr. Ronnie Ezell is having shoulder surgery the beginning of October 2026, which means that from early October 2026 until approximately January 2027, our community will have no local vet available for spay-neuter surgeries. However, Chama Humane will still provide vouchers to cover partial payment for Pagosa Springs veterinarians who accept our vouchers. Also, two low- or no-cost options are available:
1) A mobile Spay-Neuter unit in the Pagosa Springs area sponsored by D-Snip of Durango and Rugby’s Rescue House of Pagosa Springs. They accept our regular vouchers which will cover most if not all of their service charges (further subsidized by grants and donations). We will post available dates on Facebook. The next date we know of is October 12. Please contact Amy at rugbysrescuehouse@gmail.com for more details.
2) The new, spacious clinic at Espanola Valley Humane Society in Espanola. Spay-neuters are free of charge for New Mexico owners and can be scheduled online at espanolahumane.org or by calling 505-753-8662 ext 200. You will be required to provide a $20 deposit to reserve the appointment that will be returned at your check-in on the day of surgery.
The Espanola Humane clinic also offers other veterinary services for Rio Arriba County residents (see espanolahumane.org for details) and hosts a drive-through vaccine clinic from 10 am to 1 pm on Thursdays and Fridays. Note that the clinic is now at 2126 El Llano Road, Ohkay Owingeh.
